The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey has been notified by the prestigious Sunset International Wine Competition that they have been awarded two Best of Class awards and 16 medals, including two double golds and five golds, for their wines.
The Abbey’s Wild Cañon Harvest, a light and fruity sweet rosé table wine, was awarded Best of Class and double gold at 97 points. Wild Cañon Harvest is a beautiful blend of 30 grape varieties brought in by growers in the Cañon City area and other parts of Colorado. For another Best of Class and double gold, As Above So Below – The Theurgist scored 96 points. A well-balanced red wine, The Theurgist combines Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Pearl grapes grown and produced in Colorado to deliver an enlightening experience.
“This competition is juried by the best judges in the industry who understand the Western palate and lifestyle and judge with that in mind. We are extremely pleased with these results,” said The Winery at Holy Cross owner Larry Oddo.
With nearly 2,500 entries this year, the judging took place in Santa Rosa, Cali., in May. To have a wine receive a medal here is no small achievement. The competition is one of the most respected and has the honor and distinction of recognizing the best wines produced internationally.
“Having continued success in this competition is reinforcement to me that my skills at making quality wines are consistent and are equal to some of the best winemakers in the world,” said Head Winemaker Jeff Stultz.
