At the 2026 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition—widely regarded as one of the most influential and competitive wine judging events in the world—Colorado wineries delivered a resounding message: the state’s wine industry has entered a new era.
Long known for its high-elevation vineyards, experimental spirit, and lesser-known varietals, Colorado has often been framed as an emerging curiosity. This year, that narrative changed decisively. Colorado wineries didn’t just medal—they cleaned up, earning Double Gold, Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals across a wide spectrum of styles and price points. The results mark a giant leap forward in both perception and performance, fueled by industry-wide collaboration, shared knowledge, and deep respect for place.
At the center of this success is the Grand Valley AVA, a wine-growing region that defies expectations. Situated at roughly 4,700 feet above sea level, it is among the highest viticultural areas in the world. Ancient marine sediments from the long-retreated Great Inland Sea enrich the soils, while more than 300 days of sunshine annually drive flavor concentration and phenolic development. The nearby Grand Mesa creates dramatic day–night temperature swings that preserve acidity and aromatics, aided by the DeBeque Canyon’s famed “Million Dollar Breeze.” Combined with deeded water rights, arid conditions that reduce disease pressure, and natural solar heating from the Bookcliffs, the Grand Valley offers a terroir found nowhere else.
Balistreri Vineyards — Denver, Colorado
Balistreri Vineyards’ performance at the 2026 competition reinforced the strength of natural winemaking when guided by experience and restraint. The family-owned winery earned multiple medals, including Double Gold for its 2023 American Syrah and NV Cherry Wine, alongside Gold and Silver awards across a broad portfolio.

Double Gold Highlight – 2023 American Syrah
This whole-cluster–fermented Syrah is multifaceted and dynamic, opening with aromas of olive tapenade, crushed cranberry, and dried herbs such as thyme and sage. On the palate, vibrant acidity leads into flavors of cherry tobacco, smashed raspberry, and earthy baking spices, finishing dry with balanced tannins and an evolving, umami-driven depth.
Double Gold Highlight – NV Cherry Wine
A long-standing Balistreri family tradition, this wine is crafted from sour Montmorency pie cherries and aged in Stranahan’s whiskey barrels. Rich and layered, it offers depth, warmth, and a distinctive expression that bridges heritage and innovation. The winery recommends enjoying it as a dessert wine.
Founded commercially in 1998 by John Balistreri, his wife Birdie, and daughter Julie, Balistreri Vineyards remains dedicated to producing natural wines one barrel at a time. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermented on indigenous yeast, unfined, unfiltered, and bottled without additives or sulfites. Restoration Vineyards — Palisade, Colorado
Restoration Vineyards delivered one of the most compelling performances among Colorado wineries, with every submitted wine earning a medal, including a coveted Double Gold for its 2024 Estate Semillon.

Additional honors included Gold Medals for the 2022 Cabernet Franc and 2024 Pinotage, Silver Medals for NV Red Blend #5 “Mt. Hope” and 2023 Barbera, and a Bronze Medal for 2024 Grüner Veltliner—all grown in the Grand Valley and crafted entirely in-house.

The Peachfork — Palisade, Colorado
Set high on the Colorado Plateau, The Peachfork draws its identity from ancient soils shaped by sandstone, shale, limestone, wind, and water. At the 2026 competition, the winery earned multiple medals, including a Double Gold for its 2023 Chambourcin, affirming the promise of cold-hardy hybrid varietals in the Grand Valley.

Deeply colored and expressive, this wine delivers dark fruit character layered with subtle spice, structure, and balance—an authentic reflection of both site and stewardship.
The Peachfork also earned Bronze medals for Cabernet-based red blends and Cabernet Sauvignon, along with a Silver Medal for 2023 Traminette, showcasing the winery’s stylistic range.
Owned and operated by the Patton family, The Peachfork has farmed wine grapes and orchard fruit in the Grand Valley for more than 30 years. Since opening its estate winery in 2016, it has become known for wines that surprise with complexity and a clear sense of place. Sauvage Spectrum Estate Winery — Palisade, Colorado
Sauvage Spectrum’s medal success reflects its mission to push Colorado wine beyond expectation. The estate winery earned a Double Gold for its NV All Day Verde, alongside Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals across sparkling, white, and red categories.
“We were thrilled to learn this style was commended with such high honors. We were really taking a risk in crafting this wine with less-than-usual intervention, picking early due to hotter days and rising pH. What was once a challenge has become a symbol of the upheaval of the American wine consumer’s palate—and a focus for our future.”
