Carpe Wine: Denver's Urban Wine Scene is Having a Moment (Vail Daily)

Colorado itself has gone from wine country afterthought to a legitimate destination with 150+ wineries in the state. While Palisade is the heart of the Colorado wine country, Denver has become its own wine destination, with more than 10 urban wineries.
If you’re heading into the city or need a weekend escape this season, why not sip in some of the urban wineries in Denver and explore the fun and educational wine events many of them host? To help you out, I’ve mapped a few great sips to add to your itinerary.
ATTIMO Winery
ATTIMO Winery opened its doors in downtown Denver’s Ballpark neighborhood back in 2019. It’s Denver’s Italian winery, literally. The winery sources its grapes from Italy and produces its wine onsite in Denver. The concept is pretty simple, remove the middlemen from the importing process, pass those savings on to guests, create good Italian wines and sell them at an affordable price.
Balistreri Vineyards
The Balistreri family immigrated from Sicily to the United States in the early 1900s continuing the Sicilian tradition of producing wine for family and friends. Today, the family has grown their backyard vineyard into a full-scale, award winning winery. Balistreri Vineyards‘ wines are regularly recognized for excellence at various international and local competitions. They received a gold medal for their 2024 Sangiovese and 2023 Petit Verdot for the 2025 Governor’s Cup Collection, along with four silver medals for additional wines.
Bonacquisti Wine Company
Bonacquisti Wine Company is a family-owned, urban winery located in a funky, industrial warehouse space in Denver’s Sunnyside neighborhood. You’ll find their award-winning Colorado wines in the tasting room, as well as regional and international wines the company blends and bottles. In addition to a variety of awards, their 2017 Colorado Cabernet Franc and 2019 Rosso di Colorado both received 90 point ratings from Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
Blanchard Family Wines
What began as a shared passion between two brothers has become Blanchard Family Wines. James and Mark Blanchard handcraft wines from select California and Colorado vineyards, employing old-world techniques and an unwavering commitment to expressing the unique character of each site. Make sure to try their 2024 Zweigelt, which took home a Double Gold 2025 Governor’s Cup Collection.
Carboy Winery
With 30+ acres of estate vineyards in Colorado’s Grand Valley, Carboy Winery is one of the largest producers in the state. Its Capitol Hill location is adjoined with Logan Street Restaurant, so you can sip and savor in tasting room, on the patio or in the restaurant. Make sure to try their 2022 Cabernet Franc, which received a Double Gold medal for the 2025 Governor’s Cup Collection and the 2023 Teroldego, which took home Gold. Carboy also received two silver medals for additional wines.
Colorado Sake Company
While not wine as we know it, Colorado Sake Company is technically a winery, just one focused on sake. The company has grown from a small startup to an award-winning sake company. At its location in downtown Denver – the RiNo area – you can sip their selection of sake along with a variety of sushi for dinner or dimsum brunch. You can also make an evening out of your visit and hit the Denver Comedy Lounge at the back of Colorado Sake Company.
Spero Winery
Outside of downtown you’ll find Spero Winery. A family owned and operated winery that sources its grapes from Colorado’s Western slope (Palisade and Grand Junction), Pueblo and from Lodi, California. The tasting room is only open on Saturday’s from 1-5pm, unless you call to arrange a private tasting.
